What does this WiFi calculator work out?
Two numbers: how many access points your space needs, and how much internet bandwidth has to sit behind them. It sizes both from your floor area, your peak user count, the devices those users bring, and what they actually do on the network — then reports whichever AP count is higher, coverage-driven or capacity-driven.
How many access points do I need?
There is no single answer per square foot, because two limits apply at once. Coverage sets a floor: roughly one AP per 2,500 sq ft in open offices, but closer to one per 1,000–1,500 sq ft in dense spaces like conference centers and restaurants. Capacity sets another: about 25 concurrent devices per AP before performance degrades. Whichever limit bites first decides the count, and this calculator computes both.
How much bandwidth does each user need?
Far less than people assume, because not everyone transmits at once. Web browsing and email sit under 0.5 Mbps per user; video conferencing runs about 1.5 Mbps; streaming and large file transfers are the heavy items at 3–5 Mbps. Applying a 70% concurrency factor and a 30% peak overhead — which the calculator does — gets you closer to a real-world figure than adding raw per-application numbers together.

Does it account for walls and building materials?
Only indirectly, through the building-type multiplier — a warehouse and a hospital get different coverage assumptions. It does not model your specific floor plan.
